Frederick Porter Griffin Center for Local History and Genealogy

 

The Frederick Porter Griffin Center houses many beautiful and invaluable antiques donated by residents of Harrison County.
The Frederick Porter Griffin Center houses many beautiful and priceless antiques donated by residents of Harrison County.
  

Located behind the Harrison County Public Library at 117 Beaver Street, the Frederick Porter Griffin Center offers an abundance of invaluable historical resources. Among the collection are:

-Books on local families
-Death records 1882-1920
-Birth records 1882-1941
-Marriage records 1809-1920
-Harrison County Cemetary Records
-Vertical files on many local subjects and families
-Federal census records dating to 1820
     

 

 

The Hoosier Elm Chapter of the DAR received an Indiana Heritage Research Grant--made possible through the Indiana Humanities Council and the Indiana Historical Society--to microfiche and index the Harrison County Probate Records as well as copies of local newspapers in its collection dating to 1817.

 
The library contains two microfiche readers.
The center contains three microfiche readers.

From its modest beginnings in the early 1900's, the Harrison County Public Library has endeavored to meet the informational needs of the residents of Harrison County. The Frederick Porter Griffin Center for Local History and Genealogy has made its principal goal to preserve and share historical information. Today, the center has many resources to offer its patrons.
